E Ink and Himax have announced the T2000, a new color ePaper timing controller ASIC. This new TCON drives faster screen updates with lower power consumption, and should be more efficient for eReaders, digital signage, and other ePaper platforms according to the manufacturers. The T2000 also simplifies the development process by eliminating the need for a system-on-chip (SoC), leading to improved screen refresh speed and a smoother handwriting experience.
The T2000 is optimized for color ePaper and features faster color rendering using E Ink’s proprietary algorithms. The handwriting processing unit is integrated and should reduce lag in writing tasks. The ASIC has support for resolutions up to 4K UHD and frame rates up to 150Hz.
The T2000 also supports interfaces like MIPI-DSI, USB 3.0, and SPI, ensuring efficient data handling and optimal display performance across various applications. E Ink estimates the widespread adoption of eReaders with this technology could significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to printed books and LCD tablets, but that’s kind of E Ink’s pitch for all its products, all of the time.
