Samsung Display’s share of the global large-size (9″+) LCD market has fallen, so that the firm is now placed fifth: behind LGD, BOE, AUO and Innolux. These counterparts have expanded their production of low- and mid-cost panels for computer monitors and low-cost TVs.
In the first three months of the year, SDC fell 4.7 percentage points to a 14.5% share (from second place). LGD remained in the lead, as it has done for 26 consecutive quarters, with a 24.3% share.
SDC had a 19.2% market share in Q1’15. However, the shift of South Korean display makers to emphasise profitability over volume has enabled Chinese and Taiwanese companies to expand in the low-end and mid-range LCD market, at the cost of SDC’s share.
The news above came to us from an unofficial source, quoting IHS. We contacted the firm, which confirmed the news, but added that in terms of area shipments – a more meaningful metric for the display industry – SDC is still ranked second. The top five companies in terms of area, in Q1’16, were LGD (26%), SDC (18.2%), Innolux (14.2%), BOE (13.7%) and AUO (13.3%).
