AMOLED technology is on the rise and is expected to surpass TFT LCD shipments by 2024 according to Omdia’s latest Smartphone Display Market Tracker.
With the full lifting of COVID-19 control measures in the second quarter of 2023, the smartphone display market has seen a rapid recovery, driven by increased outdoor and travel activities. In 2023, annual smartphone display shipments reached 1.45 billion units, marking a 5% year-on-year increase from 2022. This growth trend is expected to continue, with shipments in the first half of 2024 projected to reach 715 million units, up 9% year-on-year from 657 million units in the first half of 2023.
According to Omdia’s 1Q 2024 actual shipment data, AMOLED shipments rose to 182 million units, a 39% year-on-year increase, whereas TFT LCD shipments fell to 172 million units, a 10% year-on-year drop. This marks the first time AMOLED shipments have surpassed TFT LCD shipments on a quarterly basis.
Omdia’s short-term forecast indicates that AMOLED will account for 53% of smartphone display shipments in the second quarter of 2024 and is expected to expand to 56% in the third quarter of 2024, exceeding 50% market share.
The launch of the iPhone 16 in the fourth quarter of 2024 is anticipated to significantly boost AMOLED shipments, ensuring AMOLED’s dominance throughout the entire year. AMOLED technology is expected to lead the smartphone display market in shipments from 2024 onwards.
