Apple Dominates Global Market for Mobile PC Displays with 21% Share in 2022

The gist of it: iPads stand alone in brand tablets and that’s a significant contributor to Apple’s overall position. For the most part, iPads will eventually be able to replace most laptops with the exception of the professional and IT products in terms of their utility. And unlike with Android phones, the non-iPad tablet market is a mass of unappealing software. Even Amazon, with some decent products and pricing, can’t make much headway. Save us, Samsung, you’re our only hope.

New research from Omdia’s Tablet and Notebook  Display & OEM Market Tracker, has found total mobile PC (include notebook and tablet) panel shipment reached 479 million units in 2022. This is the first time since 2020 that yearly shipment was not only less than 500 million units but the first downturn by 16% year on year (YoY) after 2019.

In 2022, the mobile PC market saw a cooling down in demand, with most brands experiencing double-digit declines in panel purchase volume, except for Apple. Apple purchased 99 million units of mobile PC panels, making it the largest purchaser for the fifth consecutive year. Its purchase share increased YoY to 21%, with 27 million units of notebook PC display and 72 million units of tablet PC display purchased. Lenovo was the second-largest purchaser, with 55 million units, followed by Dell and HP. Apple’s iPad was the largest tablet PC purchaser, followed by Samsung, Amazon, and Lenovo. The overall PC market remains sluggish, and tablet PC brands may reduce new product projects to control costs and avoid inventory burden in a slow market demand period.
