This is not necessarily an indication of actual production plans, but Samsung Display is reportedly developing OLED panels for the 13.3-inch Apple MacBook Air, while LG Display is working on OLEDs for the upcoming 11-inch and 13-inch iPads. Samsung is said to be developing the MacBook Air OLEDs independently, as LG lacks the production capacity to work on anything else.
Samsung had previously developed a 10.86-inch OLED display for the iPad Air, which was ultimately suspended due to volume and price concerns, as well as differentiation from the OLEDs planned for the iPad Pro. The ongoing 13.3-inch MacBook Air is seen as a test run for the potential mass production of OLEDs for future MacBooks, which are expected to be produced on 8th generation production lines. What this says is that we may looking two years out at Apple’s plans for future displays. Samsung’s 8 Gen production facilities for these types of panels, targeted at laptops and desktop monitors, won’t be online until 2024.
