BMW’s CES Highlight Shows Car That Doubles as a Display

At the bottom of this article, you’ll find a couple of posts with different views of E Ink’s Prism 3 skin on the BMW i Vision DEE concept car. It has proven to be a winning showcase for BMW at CES 2023. The car itself will never see the light of day, as most concept cars don’t, but the idea of display skins is going to become embedded in popular culture, and that’s a good thing.

While we face what is now inarguably a downturn, although it is also a post-pandemic realignment hangover as well, the display industry can feel better about taking on flights of fancy like the color-changing car. If only because future technology is always what sells today’s technology. So, I tend to avoid thinking about the practicalities of going to a body shop to replace your display skin because someone dinged your door. I prefer to think that generations that are growing up with a small handheld display as their main window into the real world will be more likely to adopt transparent display windows in trains, AR screens in stores, and yes, display skinned automobiles.
