A new “Turing” phone has been developed by Turing Robotic Industries which is based in San Francisco. The company has released details of the prototype phone which is a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801-based Android system (although it will have a custom front end). The display is a 5.5″ 1920 x 1080 format with a very narrow bezel and based on IPS LCD technology. The case front is made of an alloy of zirconium, copper, aluminum, nickel and silver that is said to be stronger than steel, but cheaper and easier to work than titanium. The case has a coating of hydrophobic nano-materials.
Turing said that the phone will be waterproof to IPX8, the same as a Sony Experia Z4. It has also said that the software will be “unhackable” and will use a hardware-implemented key system to encrypt content on the phone.
There are 13MP and 8MP cameras and the only connector is for a memory card – headphones need to be bluetooth and the power connection is a magnetic one.
Pricing is $620 for 16GB, $740 for 64GB and 128GB is $870. Pre-orders will be taken from the end of this month.

More than thirty years ago, I was running a meeting for an Apple User Group when a software company boasted that it’s game was “unhackable”. Oh, dear. The time for some of our bright young hackers to respond to this challenge could be measured in minutes. Ever since, I’ve doubted the wisdom of making this particular change.
