Taiwan’s two main backlight unit (BLU) manufacturers reported sequential falls in sales in January. Coretronic’s sales fell 10.7% from December to NT$5.2 billion ($165.6 million), while Radiant Opto-Electronics saw sales drop 23.2% to NT$3.7 billion ($117.8 million).
Coretronic said it expected BLU shipments to decline by 15% sequentially in Q1 because of seasonal effects and fewer working days around the Chinese New Year. In January, the company said shipments of projectors reached 72,000, down 17% month on month, and for monitor use, shipments fell 13% to 1.6 million. However, LCD TV applications rose 19% to 490,000 units.
Radiant Opto shipped 4.1 million BLUs for tablets, almost 3 million for notebooks, 475,000 units for monitors and 38,000 for TVs.
