8K TVs From Leading Manufacturers Coming to IFA 2018

The rumour mill is anticipating that Samsung will launch its first 8K TV for general sale at this year’s IFA exhibition in Berlin, Germany.

However, a report from Forbes citing Display Supply Chain’s Bob O’Brien suggests that the development of large-sized OLED TVs is approximately two years behind that of LCD. O’Brien believes this will have an effect on the development and affordability of 8K OLED TVs, which will most likely take the shape of these larger sets.

Last year, we predicted that publicly available 8K TVs would be mostly limited to LCD technology in their infancy.

LG showed off an 88″ 8K OLED prototype at CES this year.

The article goes on to highlight that the first OLED fab capable of producing substrates of optimal size for the production of large-sized OLED TVs (LG’s Paju facility) won’t be fully operational until 2020. Meanwhile, 10.5G LCD production is in full swing, with more production capacity on the way.

8K TVs are also highly-dependent on HDMI 2.1, which is capable of transmitting 8K signals at up to 120 frames per second. In addition to Samsung, Sony is also believed to be developing 8K TVs.
