Polar Light Partners With FineTech on New MicroLED Development

Polar Light Technologies has partnered with Finetech to develop new microLED technologies aimed at augmented reality (AR), head-up displays (HUDs), and head-mounted displays (HMDs).

Polar Light has its own method for fabricating MicroLEDs, using pyramidal-shaped gallium nitride (GaN) MicroLEDs bonded directly to indium pads on silicon chips. According to the company, this bottom-up construction method avoids damage seen in traditional LED manufacturing, improving optical performance.

To connect these MicroLEDs to silicon substrates, Polar Light partnered with Finetech. The collaboration resulted in a cold compression bonding technique using Finetech’s Fineplacer femto 2 sub-micron die bonder. This process avoids heat-related issues during bonding, achieving a claimed 85% success rate in trials.

The company claims the new MicroLEDs show improved efficiency for AR systems by up to 200 times compared to regular LEDs. This is achieved by reducing internal interference and optimizing light emission.
